Vector vs Raster – the Difference

Akunatech August 03, 2018 Graphic Designing Comments are off

Vector and Raster are the terms that all graphic designers and illustrators would say and think of all the time. These are the two main types of image files and entirely different from each other in many respectives. Each has their distinctive features too.

First, let us take raster images. Raster images are created with pixel based programs or software, or captured with a camera or scanner. This is one of the most common image forms and it has a lot of file types. jpg, gif, png, and others are the raster file types and these files and images are widely used on the web.

Vector vs Raster

While creating a raster image, using a raster program, it is just like painting an image. It is similar to dipping a brush in a paint bucket and painting the image on a wall. The best part of raster images is that, if we are using more than 1 colour, we can be able to blend the colours to soften the transition from one colour to the other.

Raster images are made of pixels. Pixel, to be defined, is a “single point or the smallest single element in a display device”. To see a pixel, you can zoom in a raster image. The more you zoom in, you can find individual squares of colour that form the image.

Vector images, on the other hand, are created with vector software. These image types are used for images that will be applied onto a physical product. Vector images are also used for many other purposes. While creating a vector image, we are drawing the outline of shapes. Vector artwork is like creating a number of different shapes. These shapes are called as objects and they display one single colour each.

Vector images are mathematical calculations from one point to the other. These calculations form lines and shapes. If you zoom into a vector image, as you did a raster image, it will look the same. There wouldn’t be any distortion of the image. It is because the math formulas in this graphic type remain the same and renders the same visual graphic, irrespective of the size of the image.

The features of Vector Graphics:

  • Scalable – As we have mentioned just above, vector graphics are scalable to any size. As they are not made of pixels, they are resolution independent. Vector shapes can be increased in size or made smaller and printed, but you can find the same quality for both of them.

  • Colour Editing is made simple – Even though you have a multi-coloured vector, you can easily it into a limited colour graphic. For processes like embroidery, speciality promotional items, limited colour graphics are necessary.

Vector graphics are most commonly used for logos, illustrations and so on. So, if you need your organization’s logo to be printed on a business card or on billboard, you can easily adjust the size without losing the quality.

If you need professional help in creating high quality vector artwork, you can search for the company that provides vector design services. With the best vector art, you can easily carry out your promotional and branding needs and grow your business.
